Biography

Stann Waithe was born on November 3, 1985 in Trinidad and Tobago to Steve and Ann Marie Waithe. He moved to the United States at the age of three and attended junior and middle schools in Maryland.   It was at his High School, however, Loch Raven, Maryland, USA where he began his extensive running career. A well – rounded individual, both academically and physically gifted, he dabbled in both football and other areas before narrowing his focus to track, specialising in the 400m.

Much of Waithe’s track and field career was under the auspices of the Michigan Wolverines, a team which regularly turns out a high number of qualified Olympic level athletes who eventfully represent their home countries in the prominent games. He was a member of this track and field team while attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. Waithe holds that his competitive spirit was partly responsible for his success. He claimed to be competitive in everything he did, whether it was sports or board games. In fact, Waithe comes from a family of very competitive athletes. His sister Anneve was an outstanding runner and his brother Stevann competed in hurdles, often at the same meets as older brother Waithe.

In 2004, Waithe competed in the Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships at Coatzacoalcos, Mexico and placed 4th in the 400m in 48.11 seconds. At the same competition Waithe pulled off an amazing 1st place in the 4x400m in a mere 3:10.97 minutes along with Deverne Charles, Jamil James, and Renny Quow. Immediately after that competition he entered the World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy where he placed 6th in the 4x400m in 3:11.33 minutes with Marcus Duncan, Jamil James and Renny Quow.

Waithe also participated in the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was able to earn a 4th place in the 400m prelims in 47.19 seconds and qualified for the semi-final. The speedy runner placed 8th in the semi-final but did not qualify for the final. In the next event, which was the 4x400m prelims he earned 2nd place in 3:04:51 minutes and placed 4th in the final in 3:04:97 minutes with Andre Barnes, Andrew Wechter and Daniel Harmsen. In July 2008, Stann Waithe represented Trinidad & Tobago at the Central American and Caribbean Championships Cali, Colombia and won the bronze medal in the 4x400m in 3:04.12 minutes with Ade Alleyne Forte, Cowin Mills, and Renny Quow.

That same year he fought vigorously to reach the Beijing Olympics, held that August, after qualifying for the Trinidad and Tobago contingent through winning a silver medal at the Sagicor games in early 2008. Waithe was highly motivated and trained with dedication to prepare fully for the honour he had earned of representing his country. Waithe, known for blowing past his opponents in the final leg of a race, and his teammates were able to make their country proud with their commendable showing at the Olympiad. Waithe ran the anchor leg of the second heat with an individual split time of 46.63 seconds. He placed 5th in the 4x400m relay event with a time of 3:04.12 minutes along with fellow Trinidadians Cowin Mills, Ato Stephens, and Jovon Toppin.

Waithe was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2011 at Loch Raven High School, the school that gave him his start for his eventual role in leading the school’s track team to their first – ever state championship.  The athlete is said to have once stated, on facing an upcoming challenging race, that the goal was to get your mind right, get your body right and from there you would be ‘ready to roll’.  Advice many up and coming young athletes can firmly get behind.
